چکیده

K A P P A and several other types of symbiotic particles are found in various stocks of Paramecium aurelia; their characteristics have been reviewed extensively by SONNEBORN (1959) and more recently by PREER (1967). Many of these symbiotic particles enable the paramecium containing them to kill paramecia that lack them and to be themselves resistant to the killing activity of animals containing the same type of symbiotic particle. Several of these symbionts are known to be lost when the genotype of the host paramecium changes with respect to certain genes; these are the kappa particles of stock 51 of syngen 4 (SONNEBORN 1943), the mu particles of stock 540 of syngen 1 (GIBSON and BEALE 1961) and of stock 138 of syngen 8 (SIEGEL 1953), and the lambda particles of stock 299 of syngen 4 (SCHNELLER, SONNEBORN and MUELLER 1959). This paper deals with the genic dependence of the kappa particles of stock 7 of syngen 2. The results of this study support the conclusion, slowly emerging in recent years, that each of the various types of symbiotic particles in Paramecium is maintained only in the presence of one or two specific alleles of chromosomal genes.

The Genotypic Control of Kappa in Paramecium Aurelia, Syngen 4, Stock 51.

HE killer trait in all stocks of Paramecium aurelia which have been investiTgated has been found to depend upon the presence of a cytoplasmic factor, kappa, carried by killers but absent from sensitive animals (SONNEBORN 1943). Kappa is a DNA containing particle of about one micron in size (PREER 1950a; PREER and STARK 1953). When kappa disappears from the cytoplasm of a killer, the animal lose...

Three different types of mate-killer (mu) particle in Paramecium aurelia (syngen 1).

A new rapid method for staining endosymbiotic particles in Paramecium is described. Two new strains of mu particle in P. aurelia syngen i are compared with the previously known mu particles of stock 540 by light and electron microscopy. Morphologically the three types of particle differ only in size, but each converts its host Paramecium into a mate-killer of a specific type. Each of the three ...

The classes of endosymbiont of Paramecium aurelia.

The endosymbionts of Paramecium aurelia appear to consist of a number of different Gramnegative bacteria which have come to live within many strains of paramecia. It is not known whether in nature this relationship is mutually beneficial or not. The symbionts from one paramecium may kill other paramecia lacking that kind of symbiont. We identify the following classes of endosymbiotic organisms....

Genetic Control of Mitochondria in Paramecium

Mitochondrial mutations fo r resistance to various antibiotics (erythromycin, chloramphenicol, spiramycin, mikamycin) have been obtained in Paramecium aurelia and their properties are reviewed. Using these mitochondrial markers, the interactions between nucletus and mitocho"kia have been studied in two ways: by microinjection of mitochondria from one stock or species into' other stocks and spec...

A Nonkiller Resistant Kappa and Its Bearing on the Interpretation of Kappa in Paramecium Aurelia.

IN spite of more than 20 years of investigation by many workers (reviewed by SONNEBORN 1959), kappa-the first-discovered cytoplasmic genetic basis of the killer trait in Paramecium aurelia-still poses intriguing problems. Among them are the correlation of kappa’s visibly distinguishable forms with its diverse properties: abilities to reproduce, to infect, to kill and to confer complete resistan...
